Airwave is a free, self-hosted media processing and management application designed to transform your existing Plex movie and TV show libraries into your own private live cable TV channels.
Typically, when using Plex, users must manually select and watch videos one by one, similar to browsing a standard streaming service interface. Airwave shifts this behavior by extracting video data from your Plex Library and arranging it into a continuous, 24/7 TV schedule. This allows users to turn on the TV, surf channels up and down, or browse a program guide just like classic cable TV, all powered by files already stored on your local device.
The standout feature of Airwave is its ability to recreate an authentic television viewing experience. Every connected user sees the exact same program airing at the very same second. It features a grid-style program guide specifically designed for TV remote navigation, complete with "Up Next" bumper cards and interstitial clips between video transitions. Additionally, it includes a DVR system that lets users rewind up to roughly 30 minutes or restart the current show from the beginning, while preventing anyone from fast-forwarding past the live broadcast time.
Channel curation is simple, allowing you to set conditions based on genre, era, or studio such as creating a dedicated 90s comedy channel or a Studio Ghibli anime channel. It even features an artificial intelligence (AI) system to assist in drafting cohesive content schedules. The platform prioritizes Direct Play streaming to deliver original source files directly without draining hardware resources for transcoding, unless the destination device lacks native format support. It also supports granular user permissions, enabling admins to restrict access to specific channels per viewer.
In terms of architecture and deployment, Airwave is split into two main components: a server module installed via Docker alongside a PostgreSQL database that processes schedule logic while delegating media delivery back to Plex, and a client app interface supported across virtually all smart TVs and streaming boxes including Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Roku, LG webOS, Samsung Tizen, as well as desktop systems and web browsers. Because the application runs entirely on your own local hardware, it collects no telemetry and never transmits user behavioral data to external servers.
