GridCraft is an open-source, clean-room spreadsheet software developed entirely from scratch in pure Rust by the ArtCraft team. It is designed as a free alternative that directly mirrors the workflow, structure, and user experience of Microsoft Excel.
The application offers full cross-platform support, running natively on macOS, Windows, Linux, and BSD operating systems, as well as in web browsers via WebAssembly. Users do not need to pay subscription fees, and the software contains no license checks or telemetry data collection.
GridCraft uses the XLSX format as its primary file type, seamlessly opening, reading, and saving everyday spreadsheets, while also supporting CSV, TSV, ODS, and legacy files like .XLS and .XLSB. Furthermore, it supports over 500 Excel formulas and functions, covering advanced features such as dynamic arrays, LET, and LAMBDA, alongside PivotTables, various chart types, conditional formatting, and structured tables.
Internally, the software leverages Rust to deliver memory safety and exceptional speed. It employs a dependency-graph calculation engine combined with copy-on-write mechanics, allowing instant, low-overhead undo operations. Its virtualized grid layout renders only the visible cells on screen, ensuring smooth performance even when handling large datasets.
A standout capability setting GridCraft apart from traditional spreadsheets is its agent-native design. Every menu, button, and user interaction is exposed as a discrete command that AI agents can invoke directly through a JSON control channel, a command-line interface (CLI), or the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This enables artificial intelligence systems to read data, calculate formulas, apply formatting, and render charts in real time.
